Australia’s COVID-19 Delta outbreak is pushing frontline hospital workers to the brink. Various modellings predict that hospitals are projected to become “technically overwhelmed” once lockdowns ease. Nurses are already overworked and exhausted. The government needs to solve this impending crisis within hospitals - one solution is in front of us in the form of fast-tracking registration processes for internationally qualified nurses.

I’m one of the more than 23,000 people who have signed the petition - Change.org/LetInternationalNursesWork - started by international nurses in Australia calling for alternate exams to be organised while we’re in the middle of a pandemic. The governments must urgently figure out a way to conduct “objective structured clinical examinations” in other states or introduce alternate examinations to support our overworked nurses while ensuring that international nurses meet Australian standards of care.

With just one examination centre in Adelaide with a capacity of only 40 participants at a time is not good enough - governments must work together to find alternate solutions for the time being.
