The Australian government has committed to building a nuclear-powered submarine fleet along with the US and the UK, at a time when they should be investing in the community as it slowly emerges out of a pandemic.

I write to you today as a member of your electorate and a signatory to the petition - Change.org/WithdrawFromAUKUS. I am extremely concerned about the recent developments around the AUKUS pact and the acquisition of a nuclear submarine fleet.

It is shocking that such a decision was made without any public consultation or engagement. The behind closed door commitment of Australia to a new defence pact and a submarine fleet shows a complete disregard for the democratic process.

A nuclear-powered submarine fleet will represent a fundamental threat to the environment and global peace. These submarines will put nuclear reactors in the ports of Australia, encourage the proliferation of nuclear weapons, encourage the continuing drive for a domestic nuclear industry and are potential sites for nuclear accidents.

These submarines will also cost tens of billions in public funds, not to mention the billions already spent on the previous submarine contract with France that is now wasted. As Australia tries to rebuild from a pandemic and economic downturn, this money should be spent on the climate emergency, healthcare, education, and public welfare.

The AUKUS defence pact tied to these submarines is also very dangerous and a threat to global peace. Australia is not an equal member of this pact and it undermines Australia’s sovereignty. Australia cannot exercise an independent foreign policy if our military is reliant on the U.S. for technology and support.

I urge you to vote against any legislation that would see Australia develop a nuclear submarine fleet. I also urge you to promote policies that foster peace and diplomacy in the region and strengthen Australia’s ability to act independently.
